Stephen Lansing (born 1950) is an American anthropologist, complexity scientist and Emeritus Professor of Anthropology at the University of Arizona. In Singapore he co-directs the Complexity Institute at Nanyang Technological University. He is especially known from his anthropological and ecological research in Bali,〔Berkes, Fikret. Resour.'' 30 (2005): 441-473.〕 == Life and work == Lansing obtained his BA at Wesleyan University in 1972, his MA in Anthropology from University of Michigan in 1974, where in 1977 he also obtained his PhD in Anthropology. In 1976 he was doctoral fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, N.J.〔Curriculum Vitae J. STEPHEN LANSING, 2014, at ''slansing.org.''〕 After graduation Lansing in 1977 started his academic career at the University of Southern California as Assistant Professor. He became Associate Professor in 1983 and Professor in Anthropology from 1990 to 1996. From 1987 to 1992 he also chaired the Department of Anthropology. From 1995 to 1958 he was Professor of Anthropology and Professor at the School of Natural Resources and Environment at the University of Michigan. In 1998 he moved to the University of Arizona, where he was appointed Professor of Anthropology, and since 2002 also Professor of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology.〔 Since 1999 Lansing participates in the Santa Fe Institute, first as External Professor, from 2002 to 2007 as Professor an since 2007 as External Professor.
